Corky's Barbecue - Memphis, TN

Behold, the Memphis pulled-pork barbecue sandwich, this one from Corky's. As someone who ate zero pork or beef for over ten years and has since done all in my power to make up for it in the past few months--a tough task, but someone's gotta do it--I challenge you to find a better barbecue sandwich than this.

No really, I challenge you...let me know if it's out there.

Home for the holidays in Memphis, I'm reminded of what makes this city a great place to be--especially if you're at Corky's. I'll admit that Memphis alone boasts several dishers out of killer sandwiches, each with its strengths--this one has the best sauce, this one the most tender pork, this one the best slaw or beans. Central Barbecue and The Bar-B-Q Shop probably among the best, though folks here are perhaps more loyal to their BBQ shops than they are to their churches. It's such a huge debate that not only do Memphians vote every year on which spot is the best, but there's even an annual barbecue competition that draws thousands from out of state and lasts an entire weekend.

One thing's for sure--there are many types of BBQ to be had in this country, and everyone has an opinion about which genre is best. Magazines try time and time again to pinpoint a BBQ mecca, but this is probably one area where we'll have to agree to disagree. And that's a very, very good thing.
